Scattered across this the 3rd largest county in Ireland are a large number of towns, villages and small hamlets, with a wide variety of dwellings ranging from castles, mansions, modern architecturally designed houses right down to the humble thatched cottage for which Donegal is world renowned for. Letterkenny is the largest of the towns and is situated on the banks of the River Swilly near the estuary to Lough Swilly. With such a colorful heritage many historical sites can be found within many of the town boundaries, e.g. Donegal Castle is in the centre of Donegal Town.
