Traditional Thatched Cottages can be frequently seen here in Donegal, many of which are designated as holiday homes and some exist as part of village museum centres such as seen in Kilmacrennan and Glencolmcille. Modern Irish thatch is largely derived from oat and rye straw, whereas many of the older roofs excavated so far have a basal coat of wheat straw. A very rare example of an ancient, genetically-diverse' land race 'populations of bristle oat (Avena strigosa) was recently discovered in a remote part of Donegal and is currently being multiplied for experimental purposes.
